Rap is everywhere you look, but what happened to the rest of hip-hop’s original culture? For more than 30 years, Jorge “Fabel” Pabon has been answering that question in his role as not-so-elder statesman and break-dance instructor/lecturer/writer/scholar. In the early ’80s when he was a member of the legendary Rock Steady Crew, and for the past 12 years, Pabon has been an adjunct professor at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts, where he has taught popping and locking moves as well as the history of break dancing. He has also recently taught similar classes at a summer high school program at NYU, spoken at the Brooklyn Museum of Art, addressed U.N. delegates about hip-hop history and culture, and been a consultant for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
