Rock Steady Crews' 36th Annivesary

By Ralo

The internationally known Rock Steady Crew is celebrating their 36th anniversary this year. It's members include a very distinctive roster of B-Boys and B-Girls from New York to Japan. Rock Steady began in New York City in 1977. It developed first in the Bronx, then quickly made its way into Manhattan. The Manhattan arm was started by Richard "Crazy Legs" Colon and B-Boy Fresh. The Rock Steady crew has since gone on to be featured in countless music videos and many big budget blockbuster films. Their anniversary is celebrated every July on the weekend of the 28th. There are Rock Steady events to commemorate their start in the New York tri-state area, Atlanta and Japan to name only a few.

This years celebration will take place in Central Park in the heart of New York City. It is being held in New York City for the first time in many years. In recent memory it was being held at Lincoln Park across the river in New Jersey. This year it is back in it's official "home".

In the past, the list of artists performing at the Rock Steady Anniversary read like a who's who of underground and old school Hip-Hop. This year is no different. The list of artists performing this year are: Pete Rock & CL Smooth, Brand Nubian, Special Ed, Homeboy Sandman, Torae, Rasheed Chappell and more.

Underground act Nutso is also slated to perform with Large Professor and El Da Sensei of The Artifacts. They have a new joint titled "Just Begun", which pays homage to the late great Jimmy Castor, with production from DJ Doom. This video version recognizes the B-Boy culture. It borrows footage from classic B-Boy films like Wild Style and Beat Street. Bus it!
