The New York Police Department said Detective Meghan Kinsella, who has been a domestic violence officer for more than nine years, responded along with 24-year veteran Detective Steven Stefanakos Monday on a report of a potential jumper on the Kosciusko Bridge.
The two detectives talked to the 45-year-old woman, who was standing on the ledge, for about two hours before she was convinced to allow them to hoist her to safety.
"I tried to convince her no matter what, we would be with her every step of the way," Kinsella told WPIX-TV. "He would talk, I would talk. I didn't even realize I was there for two hours. I was completely focused on her."
The rescue was caught on camera Monday. Stefanakos said they finally seemed to get through to the woman after he mentioned the possibility of her having a family or children.
"She was having marriage problems," a police source told the New York Daily News. "One of the ways [the detectives] connected with her was to talk to her about her daughter."
The woman was taken to Elmhurst Hospital Center for treatment.
"It's a huge relief," Stefanakos said. "It is actually euphoric because you made a difference in somebody's life, right there and then."
