Gunfire broke out shortly before 8 p.m. on Saturday, October 24, 2026, near the intersection of Perry and Manatee streets, near Florida A&M University's Bragg Memorial Stadium in Tallahassee, after the Rattlers' homecoming game against Arkansas-Pine Bluff. Crowds were still gathered in the area when the shooting happened.
Twelve people were injured, including six children or juveniles. Eleven suffered gunshot wounds. A grandmother of one victim was also injured while fleeing. The youngest victim was 11. At least three victims sustained serious injuries and one was in critical condition. As of Sunday morning, six remained hospitalized and five had been released. Those hospital figures are Sunday-morning figures, not current figures.
Tallahassee Police Chief Lawrence Revell said preliminary information showed a physical altercation between individuals preceded the shooting. Detectives now believe the shooting stemmed from a dispute between people who knew one another, and none of the victims appear to have been the intended targets, according to police.
Police arrested a 15-year-old boy on Sunday, October 25, 2026. He faces 11 counts of attempted second-degree murder and one count of possession of a firearm by a delinquent, according to the Tallahassee Police Department. An arrest is an accusation, not a finding of guilt. Police said the investigation remains open and more arrests are possible.
Florida A&M University said it was providing care and support to injured members of its community and planned to offer free counseling to students. FAMU President Marva B. Johnson said: "A horrific act of violence like this is traumatizing for our students, whether you were near the event or not."
The shooting took place near the stadium after the game had ended, while crowds remained in the surrounding area. Police described the early account as preliminary, and detectives later described the shooting as stemming from a dispute between people who knew one another. That account, and the statement that none of the victims appear to have been intended targets, frames the next stage of the investigation, which police say remains open.
A homecoming celebration at a historically Black university ended with children among the injured, and the case is still active. The arrest is a step in the investigation, not its conclusion. Police have not said the investigation is complete, and further arrests remain possible.
