The legacy of James “J Dilla” Yancey has always been bigger than the beats. Twenty years after his passing, the Detroit producer’s influence still echoes through every corner of hip-hop — and now, the J Dilla Foundation is channeling that love into action. The foundation is teaming up with the Unity Token (www.myunity.io) on a concert initiative built around lupus awareness, education, and fundraising.

Here’s the play: a series of live concerts paired with pay-per-view streaming, powered by SYNC technology and True Fan wearable digital merchandise. It’s a full-court press — the in-person energy of a show, the global reach of streaming, and digital collectibles for the day-one supporters. Under the hood, the Unity Token’s blockchain transaction tracking is designed to bring real transparency to charitable fundraising, so every dollar’s journey is out in the open.

It’s the kind of forward-thinking move Dilla himself might have appreciated — an innovator in the lab, now the inspiration for innovation in how the culture gives back.

For the Yancey family, this fight is personal. Dilla died on February 10, 2006, from complications of lupus, closing out a four-year battle with the disease. His mother, Maureen “Ma Dukes” Yancey-Smith, cared for him through those years — and she knows the disease from the inside, living with lupus herself, as does her daughter. Ma Dukes is backing the initiative.

Toney Smith, Chairman of the J Dilla Foundation, says the partnership brings technology and transparency to supporting charitable causes.

The foundation has given the concept its approval, and a formal memorandum of understanding is now in progress. No concert dates or artists have been announced yet — those are still TBA — but the blueprint is set. For a community that has kept Dilla’s name alive through tributes like the annual DC Loves Dilla celebration, this is the next evolution: turning remembrance into results.
