New York City Schools Are The Most Segregated In The Nation: New York is said to be a microcosm of the entire country because it is deemed to be such a melting pot of nationalities and culture. However, according to a recent study New York has the most segregated public schools in the nation. Some say charter schools are to blame, but charter schools only serve 6% of all children in New York. In 2014 one might expect the most segregated schools to be found in red states not in a so-called progressive/liberal blue state like New York. However, economic inequality normally follow racial lines. The schools with the most black students always seem to be under served and under funded. Schools with a majority white student body don't face the same budgetary and financial constraints.
Using Fashion To Educate and empower Women: Sseko Designs is an ethical fashion brand that hires high potential women in Uganda to make sandals to enable them to earn money through dignified employment that will go directly towards their college educations and ensure they will continue pursuing their dreams. To date, they've enabled 47 women to continue on to university. "We currently employ 50 women in Uganda from all walks of life. We believe that every woman has a dream. When she is given the opportunity to pursue those dreams, we are collectively walking towards a brighter and more just and beautiful world" says Sseko of their program.
DJ Tiger Paying Homage To Frankie Knuckles: By now most fans of urban music have learned that the legendary House Music DJ Frankie Knuckles has made his transition and joined the ancestors. Frankie Knuckles is to House Music what Kool Herc is to Hip-Hop. The Bronx born Knuckles moved from New York to Chicago and began spinning at a club known as The Warehouse. The rare records he played became known as House Music, a name that was derived from the name of the club- The Warehouse. Knuckles went on to record full-length albums and even won a Grammy in 1998. Off The Corners' own DJ Tiger is working on a tribute mix that will pay homage to the great Frankie Knuckles. Salute!

GURU Tribute
By Ralo
There have been many recognizable voices in the history of recorded rap music, Q-Tip, KRS-ONE and Chuck D are some of those notable voices. One voice that is sure to endure is the distinct and raspy voice of GURU. I'm proud to say that I introduced the music of Gang Starr to my circle of friends in the late 80's. I discovered Gang Starrs' first single "Gusto" backed with "Knowledge", because it was produced by DJ Mark The 45 King. I bought that single because I was fascinated with the production style of The 45 King. What seemed like just another vinyl record purchase, turned into a 20 year relationship of enjoying the progressive approach to Hip-Hop that is Gang Starr.
GURUs' lyrical content was conscious and socially relevant at times, yet still remained raw to the street. He always demonstrated his remarkable ability to tailor his message to his audience. GURU talked about everything from world events, on songs like "Who's Gonna Take The Weight", to relationships on songs like "Love Sick" and "What You Want This Time". GURU also touched on the topic of black on black violence on "Just To Get A Rep", and still managed to maintain his street credibility. GURU released about 13 albums in total and left behind a legacy of music and respect that will not be matched for years to come.
DJ Tiger did an Off The Corner tribute to Guru this week that was well done and very well received. It was two hours of music and conversation about the life and times of GURU, the day before the third anniversary of his passing. I got an opportunity to share some of my own personal stories about my experiences with the music of Guru, as well as tell of the good fortune I had to meet GURU on three separate occasions. The Archive of that tribute can be heard here at Off The Corner.
Talib Kweli paid lyrical homage GURU in a new song called "GURU", which was produced by Marco Polo and features DJ Premier. This tribute to GURU will be on the forthcoming album "NewPort Authority 2" by Marco Polo.
