The urban lifestyle has always been a hive of activity in the world of hip-hop culture. First there is the visually arresting images of graffiti, then there is the hypnotic rotation of turntables. You can't forget the acrobatic display of b-boys or the oral expression of MCing.
The lyricist or the MC has long been the center of attention in the sub-culture of underground hip-hop. There are often many questions about who is the best lyricist or who can beat who in a battle. The topic of discussion also centers on who's new record is wack, and who's new record is heat, or which newcomers sound good and shows promise. Lyrics, delivery and production all play key roles in judging the quality of underground hip-hop. Noncommercial rap has always had more poetic value than its corporate under produced counterpart.
This week we are posting one of the latest songs from Samssun called "Clear The Airwaves". It was created to promote an initiative of the same name. The aim of the initiavtive is to shed light on how negative rap music has gotten on commercial radio.

DjayTiger presents Samssun feat AYCE International - 'Community Service'

Born in Amityville, Long Island New York in 1974, (the birth year of Hip-Hop) he learned of and fell in love with the five elements (emceeing, deejaying, b-boying, graffiti writing, and knowledge) of Hip-Hop early on as a youth, making his first recording at the tender age of eleven! Dabbling in all the elements, his two major fortès were Visual Art and Moving the Crowd.
In his borough of this cultures Mecca, he spent years honing his craft recording a multitude of promotional material for underground radio, in and out of groups, and putting out independent vinyl and compact disc's. Throughout his career he has shared the stage with a host of artists (such as The Cold Krush Brothers, the Krash Krew, the Furious Five, Double Trouble, KRS-One, Big Daddy Kane, DJ Red Alert, De la Soul, Redman, Keith Murray, Common, O.C., Organized Konfusion, and many others). In 2000, he retired from recording.
In 2004 he founded and became the CEO of Something2Say Communications in junction with SR Junior Period Publishing ASCAP IPI# 527539336. He later met Darren A. Quinlan (a seasoned musician and engineer), who would be a pivotal presence in his career. As time progressed, he became a member of the oldest, largest, and most respected grass roots Hip-Hop organization in the world, the Universal Zulu Nation Registered ID# - 70061. After hearing him, Darren convinced Samssun to return to writing, arranging, and producing music. The fruit of their labor, (combined with the turntableism of AyCE International) was the album Community Service.
The album also features the talents of Tasheem Reynolds, Ryan Avery, Darlene DeLoney, MC K-Swift, DJ Lord Yoda X, Glorious Quan, The Black U.N., O-Man, Say Love, AtLas, Christopher Addison, Ines Robinson and Amen Patron.

Samssun "Now"
By Ralo
Last week saw the release of "Now", the first video from independent artist, Samssun. "Now", which was first heard on Off The Corners' Volume 3 Mixtape, was produced by Samssun himself, with scratches and turntableism provided by Ayce International. Lyrically Samssun branches into M.C. mode with rhymes that were artfully written and offers heaping bushels of wisdom. Opening his box of creativity, he touches on everything from The New World Order to Nikki Manaj, while showing forth his skill at combining metaphor with social relevance.
The video chronicles the movements of Samssun and Ayce as they apprehend fans of commercial rap music- Drop Squad style. Unassuming pedestrians are confronted and questioned about their taste in rap music. All of this is done in an effort to bring about balance in a world of uninspiring, under produced commercial rap. The setting is quite different from the average garden variety run of the mill rap video, and their humorous approach actually amounts to a five minute movie, as opposed to just another video.
The video was conceived and directed by Samssun, and the duty of filming and editing was handled by newcomer Jamaal Blair. "Now" is Samssuns introduction to the world. Be on the look out for his forth coming album "Community Service".

Inspire Haiti Silent Auction
By Samssun
As you all know, the Universal Zulu Nation prides itself on doing volunteer work, hosting canned food drives, tutoring sessions, home and building clean-ups, starting mentoring programs, neighborhood protection, holding seminars, conferences, creating newsletters, magazines, selling and writing books, putting together concerts, and developing programs that close the gaps between the generations and the sexes. We are an organization for the people by the people! Everybody is for Zulu but Zulu is not for everybody because being a Zulu is work!
The best Nation is a doe-nation!
More often than not, the island of Haiti engenders negative connotations and images resulting from its: devastating poverty, political unrest, and violence. Truthfully, Haiti is an island full of dichotomies. While it’s true that the majority of Haitian people live in undeniably devastating conditions, Haiti’s colorful language, pulsating music, as well as its vibrant and rich culture also characterize the island. It is undoubtedly Haiti’s kind, spirited people and their unrelenting drive to persevere despite all things, which inspired us to form “Inspire Haiti.”
Inspire Haiti was founded by eight individuals exclusively for the charitable, medical and educational purposes of providing relief to the poor. Inspire Haiti’s objective is to improve the living conditions for the majority of Haitians: one person at a time, one community at a time. They aim to do this by building a comprehensive community-based organization focused on empowering the people of Haiti through quality health care, nutrition, education and social reform.
Please join them for an evening of light hors d’oeuvre and cocktails.
