KRS-ONE AND CHUCK-D CALLS OUT HOT97, WILL YOU ALSO STAND UP AND FIGHT THE POWER?

KRS-ONE AND CHUCK-D CALLS OUT HOT97, WILL YOU ALSO STAND UP AND FIGHT THE POWER?

By @DjTiger

For years the station that claims they are "Where Hip Hop and R&B lives" has been unbalanced in their musical taste, constantly playing rap records catered to the partying, drug dealing, shoot em up           stereotypical culture of rap, and Hip Hop pioneers Chuck D and KRS1 are fed up. Read and listen to what they had to say about this growing subject that is finally being heard by more than a few. As always big shout out to Manny Faces of BirthplaceMag who has spoken about this a long time ago. It's about time yall open up your ears and listen.

KRSONE:
When Funkmaster Flex stopped playing my music for no reason,” KRS-One said. “And when Angie Martinez forgot her roots. And I don’t know if y’all know this woman, but her name is Tracy Cloherty. Well, she banned me from the station. And Lisa Evers, Street Soldiers, hung up on me live on air. Because I said they said—This is when Foxy Brown and Lil Kim had their little shootout in front of Hot 97 and they had us on the air. And I said ‘Y’all the ones that promoted that shit.’ All day long ‘Gun, gun, gun.’ All day long ‘Murder, murder, murder’…There’s something called a balance. In the morning when our kids are going to school that’s not the time to play ‘killing, shooting, nigga, bitch, and fuck.’ When you know your self-worth, and you read and you ask questions and you study and you travel, you become free. But the cost of freedom is that you’re not gonna be in the mainstream. You’re not gonna be on the cover of every magazine…Years ago they told us ‘Make sure you get a college degree in case your rap career don’t work out. You got something to fall back on.’ Today, ‘Make sure you can rap in case your degree don’t work out’. It’s been 25, 30 years and Rap is no longer a pastime, this is a worldwide profession.”  During an interview with whomag.net last September KRS1 said. "If the radio ever played my music, I would sue them, and they know it, which is why they don’t play my music. If you play KRS, I’ll sue you. Straight up. I don’t even want my music on mainstream radio. They don’t deserve it. They destroy careers." - Source, hiphopdx.com

KRS-ONE AND CHUCK-D CALLS OUT HOT97, WILL YOU ALSO STAND UP AND FIGHT THE POWER?

The look on my face after I heard what a sloppy fiasco @hot97 in NYC has made of HipHop.

CHUCKD:
"My goal by year's end is to change the face and sound of urban radio, I've been in this shit 30 years too long to just sit and let it be. I'm not going to be the grim reaper. I don't want to be the grim reaper. But people have to stand up and we need some change, and it's time.” ChuckD speaks on SummerJam and the constant use of the N word: "If there was a festival and it was filled with anti-Semitic slurs or racial slurs at anyone but Black people, what do you think would happen? Why does there have to be such a double standard? It's just a sloppy presentation of the art form, the worst presentation known to man," D explained. "It's negligent. There needs to be a greater representation of the culture and the community on that radio station.  - Source, hiphopdx.com

The Bridge Is Over, created by Marley Marl???

This excerpt was taken from an interview of Marley Marl by Ali Shaheed Muhammad Frannie Kelley
 of Microphone Check

MARL: You know who my hero was before I even got into hip-hop? I just gotta lay it on the line: Giorgio Moroder. I was into Giorgio like you would not believe. See, I was into electronic music. I was into triggering bass lines and making it sequence — I was a sequence head. That's how I beat people in hip-hop early because I was already sequencing. I already knew what a trigger was. I knew how to trigger anything off of anything.

The whole "Bridge" — my song I made with MC Shan — all that was trigger music, triggering samples from a 808 with separate samplers around the room. The pulse from the 808 would go into my sampler and make it react. Once I made that discovery at Unique, guess what I did? I went right around the corner to Sam Ash, bought myself three little cheap samplers. I went home and started experimenting, taking all my drum sounds. Matter of fact, what I would do at that point, I went to my reel-to-reel. I would have leader, snare, leader. Leader, kick, leader. Hi-hat, leader. On the reel.
So I would sit with the artist and say, "So you want to make a song today? Pick out your kick and snare you want." Now this is before disc; that was my disc. I still have that reel, and that is the same drum reel I lost it in Power Play Studios and they made "The Bridge Is Over."

MUHAMMAD: I was just going to ask you about that — so is that story true? I didn't know if it was true.

MARL: Of course that's a true story.

KELLEY: Tell the whole thing.

KRS-ONE "Disaster Kit"

By Ralo

In the wake of Hurricane Sandy the New York Tri-State area is still recovering from an exceptional amount of flooding, wind damage, power outages and even lose of life. Parts of New Jersey were completely devastated by the strength of wind and rain. Parts of Brooklyn and Long Island were also hard hit by flood damage and down power lines. Many residents went without power for as much as two weeks. In some places the power outages lasted past the two week mark.

The Hudson River came over onto The Westside Highway. Some subway stations were so flooded that the water was up to the ceiling and in some cases came out onto the sidewalk.

For years we have been hearing about the concept of preparedness. Aton Edwards of The International Preparedness Network has been spreading the message for some time now. His website, readyforanything.org is committed to spreading the word about what is needed when a natural or man made disaster strikes.

KRS-ONE acting as a lyrical Aton Edwards, explains perfectly what is needed to be prepared in the event of an extreme, extended emergency on "Disaster Kit". Chuck D says "Disaster Kit" is a perfect example of what a rap record can do.

"Disaster Kit was produced by long time KRS-ONE affiliate, Mad Lion. This is the first collaboration between Mad Lion and KRS in many years, the result is phenomenal.
