DJ Premier’s D&D Studios (HeadQCourterz) Closes

Illmatic. Reasonable Doubt. Ready To Die. Almost every Gang Starr and every Premo track since '92 was recorded here. But yesterday, Dj Premier announced that D&D Studios  (also known as HeadQCourterz Studios) will close its doors forever. The famous recording home will be eventually converted to one of many luxury apartments, as Premo stated in one of his recent Instagram post: #RichClownsRuinManhattan. But this won't stop the legendary producer from making timeless hits, as he plans to record at Kaufman Astoria Studios in Queens NY. I am sure the HeadQCourterz name will move with him. Check out his IG photos below of Premier and his final moments at D&D studios.

De La Soul, Dj Premier and Pete Rock to Drop a new mixtape in September

De La Soul, Dj Premier and Pete Rock to Drop a new mixtape in September

Source: XXLmag
Earlier this year, both De La Soul and Pete Rock confirmed that a new project, set to be called Premiem Soul On The Rockswas in the works which would be entirely produced by both Rock and DJ Premier. Originally scheduled to be an EP, the collection will now take the form of a mixtape, which the famed Long Island trio consisting of Posdnous, Dave and Maseo will begin working on this September.
“Right now we’re just accumulating beats,” Dave told XXL in a phone interview earlier today (Aug. 4). ”The guys have been sending us beats. No real idea of what the theme is gonna be, the theme behind the title, what that’s gonna be, if it’s gonna be skits, if it’s gonna be songs, remakes, whatever it is. Right now we’ve just been accumulating beats and waiting for Premier to handle some stuff as well. So it’s still in its early stages, but we actually plan on recording through the month of September for it, so we’re getting on it.”

De La Soul has been keeping busy throughout 2014, which also marks the 25th anniversary of the group’s debut album, 3 Feet High And Rising, a milestone that came in March. The month prior, on Valentine’s Day, De La released their entire back catalog for free via Dropbox. The promotion proved so wildly popular that Dropbox actually crashed twice, causing the group to apologize to fans. A second project, Smell The D.A.I.S.Y., followed a month later via BitTorrent, and was composed of a mixtape using all J Dilla beats, an audio letter from the trio and a documentary film titled Dilla Still Shining, all in one bundle. They followed that by releasing 100 limited-edition vinyl instrumental copies of the Dilla tape to record stores around the country on Easter, positing the move as an Easter Egg hunt for fans.

Dj Premier sits with Life and Times and talks Nas and Illmatic

Dj Premier sits with Life and Times and talks Nas and Illmatic

L+T: I’m sure you’re getting sick of the Illmatic questions, but mine is different! From the three tracks you produced on the album, I definitely feel the connection between the instrumentation along with the lyrics – they go hand-in-hand. When you worked with Nas on those three records, how were you able to decide what sounds would actually work with the lyrics? It’s such a real story, the lyrics are poignant.

DJ Premier: Well, with “Memory Lane,” Nas was laughing at the album cover. It was a Reuben Wilson sample – which I can say because it was cleared – I don’t mind people know that. When we were looking at the cover, Nas was like, “Look at this dude, look at his afro!” He was laughing. When he heard that sample (hums the vocals) in the beginning of the song, that’s all we had looped. Well, I looped it. He was like, “Yo, that’s what I want.” I’m like, ‘Yeah, but it ain’t really hardcore beats.’ We had already done N.Y. State of Mind. I was like, ‘I want to do another one on that level.’ He was like, “Nah, because I already have a lot of hardcore stuff already. I need to get something like that to take it to a different type of sonic sound.” I didn’t really like it. So he was like, “Yo, just hook it up and if it doesn’t work as I lay the vocals, we’ll scrap it.” (raps the intro) I was like, ‘Okay’ and it made me like it. He rapped over it and I was like, ‘Alright, we’ll keep it.’
Dj Premier sits with Life and Times and talks Nas and Illmatic

L+T: Everyone has their own perspective of Illmatic. For you, what is it about Illmaticthat makes it – as many critics and some musicians express – one of the greatest hip hop albums in history?

DJ Premier
: Mainly because of the fact that at that time Nas was this new sound in music, his attitude, his cockiness – like, “Yo, y’all can’t fuck with me” – and just the rawness and the bluntness of the things he was saying from “[Live at the] Barbecue” to “Halftime” – just all of that stuff made it like...

NAS, DJ PREMIER, QTIP AND TALIB KWELI SPEAK ON GURU OF GANG STARR

RIP GURU - GANG STARR

Hip-hop lost one of its most distinct voices on April 19th when Guru, whose collaboration with DJ Premier as Gang Starr expanded the genre's scope, died after a year-long struggle with cancer. He was 48.

Guru ˜ born Keith Elam ˜ grew up in the Roxbury section of Boston. His father was that city's first black municipal judge and his mother was a library director in the city's public schools. Elam graduated from Morehouse College, worked as a social worker, and began graduate school at Manhattan's Fashion Institute of Technology before he dropped out in the mid-'80s, dove headlong into New York's burgeoning hip-hop underground and began his rap career as MC Keith E.

Over a 14-year span, Gang Starr released six albums, all universally acclaimed, and despite the duo's uncompromising music, which was often dense and rarely radio-friendly, had two gold albums and several Top 10 singles, including "Mass Appeal." As a solo artist, Guru recorded four editions of his Jazzmatazz series, rhyming over jazz arrangements featuring the likes of Herbie Hancock, Roy Ayers, and Branford Marsalis.

NAS - "Guru was like a vanguard of rap, Gang Starr were right there, at the forefront of style on the New York streets."

DJ PREMIER -  "I'm gonna miss hearing his signature monotone voice when he walks in the room, but the songs will always bring it back to me," we had planned to reunite for a seventh album when the time was right, tragically we will never reach that day."

QTIP - "He had one of the most distinctive voices in music, If you wanted to understand rapping, story-telling, if you want to get thugged out, if you want to get political, you could listen to Gang Starr. They just encompassed everything that hip-hop embodied."

TALIB KWELI - "Gang Starr's music was the soundtrack to me falling in love with hip hop, when we first met, Guru and his crew snuck me and my crew in at New York's New Music Seminar back in 1990.  Guru was a friend, a mentor, and a legend and will be forever missed."

gangstarr guru tribute 2014

Keith Elam aka Gifted Unlimited Rhymes Universal or Guru, departed this earth on April 19, 2010. He left behind a legacy of innovation, creativity, and experimentation among his many other gifts. Whether contributing his raspy voice to the production of DJ Premier in Gang Starr or fusing his vocal abilities through his own Jazzmatazz projects, G.U.R.U. always pushed the boundaries. April 19, 2014 is the 4 year anniversary of his passing, but we will celebrate his life & music with a special broadcast on www.offthecorner.net Friday April 18th @ 10pm

GANGSTARR WEEK : NAS'S ILLMATIC COINCIDES WITH THE DEATH ANNVERSARY OF KEITH ELAM AKA GURU OF GANGSTARR

GANGSTARR WEEK : NAS'S ILLMATIC COINCIDES WITH THE DEATH ANNVERSARY OF KEITH ELAM AKA GURU OF GANGSTARR

I know people are talking about the upcoming Nas Documentary "Time Is Illmatic" and the upcoming anniversary of Guru's passing, but I just realized that both of these events share the same April 19th date. Both of these artists have made a monumental mark in Hip Hop culture and also share common links. Dj Premier, who is one half of GangStarr, worked with Nas in creating timeless masterpieces, including NY State of Mind, Memory Lane, Nas Is Like, and many more. Illmatic is one of the best if the best Hip Hop album released, EVER.

GANGSTARR WEEK : NAS'S ILLMATIC COINCIDES WITH THE DEATH ANNVERSARY OF KEITH ELAM AKA GURU OF GANGSTARR

And Gangstarr's albums, Daily Operation, Step in the Arena, Hard To Earn, and Moment of Truth can be rightfully argued as being in that top album list. These are the artists that molded me coming up because they truly represent what real New York Hip Hop Culture is supposed to represent. They entertain while also dropping knowledge, and with Dj Premier behind the boards, you have a winning formula. This Friday I will be dedicating a special mix at 10pm est dedicated to Gangstarr and Keith Elam aka Guru on my station, FULLBLAST RADIO that you can listen to by clicking the link and the station will also be embedded here on Offthecorner.net.

Meeting Rakim At SOB's; Was Rakim the Dj scratching on the Album Paid In Full?

Rakim at SOBs-OffTheCorner_net
Shout out to my Homie Danny Vega for the pic

In a every person's lifetime we get to witness greatness. We get to witness an Emcee who has that special niche about them. Someone who is far ahead of our time that when you listen to their lyrics 28 years later, the feeling you get brings you back to the time they first blew you away. For me that emcee was and is none other than the God MC, Rakim. His contribution to Hip Hop culture is cemented in legacy as one of the best if not the best Emcee ever. I got to witness greatness last night at SOB's in NYC. First off I'd like to point out that the night did not start off good for me, because as a dj you are supposed to know your crowd, and of course the crowd in attendance had to be at least 80% of 30 and older. The ones that were around when Rakim slammed the mic down to make sure it's broke. So to have the house dj playing songs from Lil Wayne, Drake, and some other rap radio commercial trap laced music was down right disrespectful if you ask me. This dj should have been dropping gems from A Tribe Called Quest, to Run DMC, to Sugarhill Gang and kept it in the era of what the crowd would have been going crazy for. I had to get that blast out because not only do we hear this music 24/7 on these so called NY Hip Hop radio stations, but to play it in front of the crowd waiting to see Rakim was ridiculous.

Dj Premier will Produce Nas's Post Def Jam Album

Source - HipHopdx.com

DJ Premier says that he and Nas will do an album together once Nas' contract with Def Jam runs out.
DJ Premier says that he and Nas will be working on a long-discussed album together soon.
“It’s coming,” DJ Premier says during an interview posted by Phenom Blak. “I just saw him last week. It's coming. He has another project to drop on Def Jam, then he's a free agent. Let him get that out. It'll give me time to get my artists ripped and ready. Then we can all tour together or something."
DJ Premier and Nas have worked together throughout Nas’ career, including the rapper’s acclaimed debut album, 1994’s Illmatic. DJ Premier produced three of the collections 10 songs, “N.Y. State Of Mind, “ “Memory Lane (Sittin’ In Da Park)” and “Represent.”
The only guest rapper on Illmatic was AZ, who appeared on “Life’s A Bitch.” DJ Premier said that he didn’t know whether or not AZ would appear on his forthcoming album with Nas.
"Nas is in charge,” says DJ Premier, who has been discussing doing an album with Nas since at least 2006. “I'm just the producer."
In addition to his work as one-half of Gang Starr, DJ Premier has also produced for a number of other artists, including Nas, Jay Z and The Notorious B.I.G.. DJ Premier says that he tries to tailor his production to the artist with whom he is collaborating, especially if he’s worked with them before.
“When I go in,” he says. "I’m totally thinking of that artist in every way in order for it to sound like I’m making the right thing for what will bring them out better than the last record we did."
DJ Premier uses samples as the foundation of his music, but he says that he’s evolved from his days of relying heavily on the material of James Brown and funk artists as source material. Now, DJ Premier says he gets samples from a variety of sources.

“It could be a dog that just got ran over by a car and the way he squealed, I was like, ‘Yo. I’m making a beat out of that,’” he says. “But shit’s gonna be funky.”

FAT JOE - DARKSIDE III

I have to say i am very impressed with this Fat Joe mixtape, i expected some weak radio simplistic beats but instead Joe comes raw, spitting like he found a page of Big Pun's rhyme book along production by Dj Premier, 9th Wonder, Diamond D, Cool and Dre and Illa. Definitely download this one, if you love real hip hop, you won't be disappointed. My favorite tracks include the Premo produced 'Your Honor' feat Action Bronson, '9th Wonder' produced by 9th Wonder of course, and the Cool & Dre produced 'Bass'.
1. “Darkside III” f. Dre (produced by Streetrunner)
2. “Madison Squares” (produced by Young Sap and Cool and Dre)
3. “MGM Grand” (produced by Streetrunner)
4. “Pain” (produced by ILLa)
5. “Your Honor” f. Action Bronson (produced by Premier)
6. “9th Wonder” (produced by 9th Wonder)
7. “Cypher” f. Nick Shades (produced by Diamond D)
8. “Grimy in The Early 90’s” (produced by ILLa)
9. “Bass” f. Nick Shades (produced by Cool and Dre)
10. “Angel Sings 2” (produced by Young Hype)
