To bring in the new year we build with AKBAR. He shares with us his
story of migrating from yhe Bronx to Chicago and then back to the Bronx.
He also stresses the importance of eating healthy. We also touch on the
fact that he is a writer (Graffiti Artist). Sit back and enjoy yhe

The urban lifestyle has always been a hive of activity in the world of
hip-hop culture. First there is the visually arresting images of
graffiti, then there is the hypnotic rotation of turntables. You can't
forget the acrobatic display of b-boys or the oral expression of MCing.
The lyricist or the MC has long been the center of attention in the
sub-culture of underground hip-hop. There are often many questions about
who is the best lyricist or who can beat who in a battle. The topic of
discussion also centers on who's new record is wack, and who's new
record is heat, or which newcomers sound good and shows promise.
Lyrics, delivery and production all play key roles in judging the
quality of underground hip-hop. Noncommercial rap has always had more
poetic value than its corporate under produced counterpart.
This week our spotlight is onWu Tangs' Cappadonna, who struck ouy on his won in 1998 with his debut album The Pillage. He followed that three years later with his sophomore album entitled The Yin And The Yang. He has since done seven full length albums. Number seven is a sequel album called The Pillage 2. The most recent song and video is Black Woman.

This week our spotlight is on Michigan’s' own DJ Soko, known for his time spent Djing locally in his area. Now living in Brooklyn, DJ Soko has released a full length album titled "Domino Effect", which boasts a host of special guests. The album includes guest vocal appearances from Guilty Simpson, Ugly Heroes, Marvwon and more. "Land Mine" features underground heavyweight Rasheed Chappell.
Today, nearly two months after Sean P's passing, Statik Selektah releases “Admiral Greets General.” The song is a straightforward bar-busting moment over a rich Soul loop. With an especially gravelly voice, this is one of Sean’s presumed final recordings—and like so many others, he gave it the most:

They have duration in the business that is almost unmatched. Since 1987 Public Enemy has been leading the way in the sub-genre of conscious Rap. Now, in 2015 Public Enemy is back with their 16th, yes 16th album, entitled Man Plans God Laughs The latest video from the project is called Mine Again. Centred in Africa, MineAgain delivers the hard hitting message PE is known for.

As a teenager my weekend ritual was tuning in to the commercial R&B stations in New York to hear the latest in independent Rap Music. We only got Rap Music for a few hours on the weekend on the radio in New York back then. You had to be in front of the radio ready to "tape" the newest independent releases. I was the person that would fall asleep with headphones on in the bed with the boom box trying to record the world premiers.
In 1985 stand-outs in the independent Rap scene included Brooklyns' Bad BoysFeaturing K love on Starlite Records, which featured a replayed parody of The Inspector Gadget theme from the animated television series- produced For Bad Boys by Tony D. The Bad Boys single came complete with a music video (rare for 1985) directed by New Yorks' Dr Dre of Yo MTV Raps fame. This single a video played a key role in the development of the music video in Rap Music. Turn It Up by Kool Moe Dee on Sugarhill Records was also in heavy rotation on the weekend mix shows. This was his first single as a solo act and helped launch his career as a solo artist.
One hot August night in 1985 I was in front of the radio hoping to record something new for my most recent pause-edit mixtape. I heard the intro to TheShow by Doug E. Fresh And Slick Rick and was completely blown away. Doug E. Fresh had previous hits with records like The Original Human Beat Box on Vintertainment Records, but this was like nothing I had heard up to that point.
The record starts with Chill Will and Barry B scratching "Oh my god" from The Cold Crush Brothers PunkRock Rap and "Fresh" from ChangeThe Beat by Beside. The track was produced by a 15 year old Teddy Reilly and featured the shaker sound that was used heavily in subsequent tracks produced by Herby Love Bug. The track also featured the same Inspector Gadget theme used by Bad Boys months earlier.
Needless to say The Show is revered as one of the most outstanding classics in the history of recorded Rap Music. Doug E. Fresh and Slick Rick still continue to travel and perform, and audiences still can't seem to get enough of The Show.

IMMORTAL, J BUDDAHS, JOHN ROBINSON and POISON PEN all rock in the MS 51
park (PH went to school there).

Robert Alan Diaz (September 17, 1975 – June 9, 2015)[1][2] known by his stage name Pumpkinhead or P.H., was an Americanrapper and hip hop artist. He grew up in the Park Slope area of Brooklyn, New York with his mother and younger sister.
Pumpkinhead started as a boy at age 10. He began writing rap lyrics during his 6th grade language arts class after hearing the song "Nightmares" by Dana Dane. He also stated he was influenced by Redman and the Leaders of the New School, as well as Doug E. Fresh.[3] He also cites his experience of meeting 2Pac and witnessing his ability to write and record songs on the spot as a motivating factor in his emceeing.[3]
Pumpkinhead got a break in New York City hip hop when a friend of his gave a demo tape to Bobbito Garcia of the Stretch & Bobbito Show onWKCR.[4]
Pumpkinhead's breakthrough single was 1997's "Dynamic," which became a staple of mixtapes in the late 1990s. The World Famous Beat Junkies featured the remix—featuring guest appearances by Poka Face, Meat Pie, Ocean, What? What?, CES, DCQ and The Bad Seed—on their second mix CD, The World Famous Beat Junkies, Vol. 2 in 1998.
Following the release of the leak single 'Suicide Doors', Skyzoo returns with the official first single off of Music For My Friends; "Luxury". The track, featuring Buffalo new comer Westside Gunn on the hook, is best described by Sky as "a New York trunk knocker". Sky further explains:
"The idea behind the record was to put together something that really felt like the city. Something that really felt like the NY that I know and grew up in. From the content to the beat, it feels like expensive cars driven by guys from down the block who figured out a way to get whatever they want and celebrate those realizations. That's how the city looked and felt to me growing up, and I wanted to build something like that for this generation that still tied into the album's overall theme of innocent ignorance and misguided desires".
Production wise, the song finds Skyzoo behind the boards for the first time, with coaching of course from his longtime collaborator !llmind. "I had this idea for what the song should be sonically, but I had trouble getting that from the producers I went to at the time. I decided to try to man the machine myself, but there was no way I was gonna be able to pull it off without my man !llmind and his genius talents playing Steve Kerr and coaching my efforts. I went to him with the idea, picked the drums, the loop, the change ups, etc, and he then helped orchestrate it and bring it to life".
Additionally, the video for "Luxury" has been shot and is in the works for an early June release.
