Breaking News: Mumia Abu-Jamal & "More" Black Panther PP/POW's Condemn NBPP Beating Of Dhoruba Bin Wahad

Beating Bin Wahad (2:40) by Mumia Abu-Jamal

UPDATED STATEMENT FROM BLACK/NEW AFRIKAN POLITICAL PRISONERS

ON THE "New" Black Panther Party (NBPP) ATTACK ON DHORUBA BIN WAHAD

The undersigned current and former Black/New Afrikan political prisoners condemn the vicious assault perpetrated on our comrade Dhoruba Bin Wahad by the security team of group calling itself the New Black Panther Party at a public event on August 8, 2015 in Atlanta Georgia. We reject any justification or rationalization for this attack on an elder, himself a documented target of COINTELPRO and a former political prisoner who spent 19 years in the state’s custody. The “New Black Panther Party” does not represent us; nor does it represent the legacy of the Black Panther Party of which we are proud to have been a part.

We fully support Dhoruba Bin Wahad and view this assault as one committed against all of us. We urge everyone to join us in condemning the attack. We wish our brother a full and speedy recovery.

Tuxedo - The M+M Mixes

Tuxedo - The M+M Mixes

Tuxedo - The M+M Mixes

IN THE STORE | TUXEDO - THE M+M MIXES

John Morales is a DJ and mixer who helped to pioneer the use of editing for dance floor remixes of records in the 1980s. Morales mixed Tuxedo’s self-titled album, and returned to the master tapes to create his own mixes for this disco 12-inch single.

Morales got his start as a DJ in the 1970s, and began working in the studio on his mixes out of pure necessity. “I needed to get more out of the records I was spinning,” he says, “so I started making medleys and remixes because the records in those days were too short, the 3 minute range.”

Working long before the era of digital editing, he explains, “I started to do my edits using the pause button on a Teac cassette deck, [then] purchased a Sony reel-to-reel. It was hard work, with long hours of editing and putting all the little pieces of tape together to make something creative happen.”

In 1982, Morales partnered with Sergio Munzibai – giving birth to the “M&M” moniker – and worked on a vast number of dance-oriented releases with Morales focusing on music while Munzibai handled artist relations, management and promotion.

Alongside cult and groundbreaking records for the Fantastic Aleems (“Get Down Friday Night”), Class Action (“Weekend”) and Jocelyn Brown (“Somebody Else's Guy”) the pair mixed dance-floor successes for DeBarge (“Rhythm Of The Night”), Harold Faltermeyer (“Axel F”), Shakatak (“Down On The Street”), Miami Sound Machine (“Dr Beat”), The Temptations (“Treat Her Like A Lady”) and hundreds more in a period that saw them almost ever-present on the Billboard Dance, R&B or Hot 100 pop charts.

Munzibai died in 1991, while John continued solo production projects included such acts as Debbie Gibson, Brenda K Starr, Denise Lopez, The Thompson Twins, Blow Monkeys, Five Star and Art Of Noise.

Three compilations of John Morales’ The M&M Mixes were released by BBE Music in 2009-2013.

URGENT MEDICAL & LEGAL UPDATE ON POLITICAL PRISONER MUMIA ABU JAMAL IN NYC

The Free Mumia Abu-Jamal Coalition invites you to a:
REPORT TO THE MOVEMENT ON MUMIA

Legal, Medical, and Political Updates
and Discussion of Next Steps

WHERE: ALL SOULS UNITARIAN CHURCH, 1157 Lexington Avenue (between 79th and 80th Streets on Lexington Avenue)

Invite your friends ~ Circulate widely ~ Light refreshments available!

Now that Mumia’s legal team has filed the demand for a very specific medical treatment plan, based on the tentative diagnosis of his medical condition that one of his doctors has made, we feel it is important that we share the legal strategy and the medical findings with the movement. There will also be a presentation of the outrageous and deadly medical picture in the prison system as a whole for all of our political prisoners as well as for the general prison population. We will discuss some beginning plans for the next political steps we must take to save Mumia’s life and to free him. And we look forward to hearing initiatives others might take as well in moving forward.

Photo Credit: Jack Manning, The New York Times.

At the Bronx Museum, Thursday, September 10th, hear from former members of the Young Lords who took part in the daring takeover of Lincoln Hospital. The Young Lords exposed the practices of medical racism by hospitals in poor communities and were instrumental in the creation of todays current Patients Bill of Rights in all NYC hospitals.

A Patient's Bill of Rights: Fighting for Community Health at Lincoln Hospital:
In the early morning hours of July 14th 1970, the Young Lords occupied Lincoln Hospital’s major administrative building in response to the city’s indifference to the health needs of Puerto Ricans and African Americans in the South Bronx and the deplorable conditions of health care delivery at Lincoln Hospital.
This panel will consider the prominence of health issues in the activism of the Young Lords, and the relevance of these historical struggles to contemporary health care debates.  In conjunction with the current museum exhibition...

1972 Black Panther Party 10 Point Platform & Program
Point #6:
We want completely free health care for all Black and oppressed people.
We believe that the government must provide, free of charge, for the people, health facilities which will not only treat our illnesses, most of which have come about as a result of our oppression, but which will also develop preventative medical programs to guarantee our future survival. We believe that mass health education and research programs must be developed to give all Black and oppressed people access to advanced scientific and medical information, so we may provide ourselves with proper medical attention and care.

Public and Community Engagement Programs are made possible by the Institute of Museum and Library Services and the Mertz Gilmore Foundation. "A Patient’s Bill of Rights: Fighting for Community Health at Lincoln Hospital" is made possible, in part, by the New York Council for the Humanities. Beer has been donated by Bronx Brewery.

Dam-Funk / LA Record / Invite the Light L.A. release party

Dam-Funk / LA Record / Invite the Light L.A. release party

Dam-Funk / LA Record / Invite the Light L.A. release party

Dam-Funk graces the cover of the local favorite music mag, LA Record for their Fall 2015 issue.

As appropriate to Dam-Funk's well-known Gemini nature, the new Invite The Light is an album of two halves-the first an exploration of the light and the sky, climaxing on the Flea / Computer Jay / Dam collab "Floating On Air," and the second a strapped-for-battle fight for survival on the dirty surface of the Earth, announced by the crushing "HowUGonFuckAroundAndChooseABusta?" (And exploded by the merciless "Hunt And Murder of Lucifer," too.) Guests like Snoop Dogg, Jody Watley, Q-Tip, Ariel Pink, Leon Sylvers III and IV and more slide through The Light, which begins and ends with underground-radio-style stay-strong messages from funk legend Junie Morrison, and which takes everything you recognize as the sound (and soul) of Dam-Funk and reveals new vision and power. If his 2009 debut Toeachizown demonstrated everything Dam could do, The Light demonstrates everything Dam is: it's a focused and intensely personal album as it glides from bright to night, with long moments where the bleakness and the beauty dissolve into the same fundamental thing. On Invite The Light and in this interview, too, Dam reveals himself as an artist aiming for the horizon instead of just for the hit-he's the kind of musician who always wants to go a little further. He speaks now about freedom, healing and how there might be just one more Dam-Funk record left. - intro by Chris Ziegler from LA Record Fall 2015

Invite the Light comes out Sep. 4th. On the 5th, Dam-Funk & Nite Jewel will perform at the Los Angeles release party for the album at Telegraph Ballroom. This is an all-ages event. Grab tickets here.

Anderson .Paak and producer Knxwledge are working together as NxWorries. They debuted with the single “Suede” last spring. Here is the music video, directed by Calmatic.

Anderson .Paak is “The L.A. Savant All Over Dr. Dre's New Album” to quote the wise folks at Fader. The singer is featured on Dre’s Compton, but his own credits go beyond vocalist – songwriter, drummer, live performer and producer, whose music formed much of Watsky’s All You Can Do (2014).

Knxwledge is a prolific hip-hop beat maker from Los Angeles whose record Hud Dreems we released this year. His production credits include tracks for Kendrick Lamar, Joey Badbutt, Sandman, and a few other lucky collaborators.

NxWorries are working on a full-length album for Stones Throw Records, and are currently on tour with Earl Sweatshirt.
